the PROBLEM

Context: There is a need for women to track and understand their menstrual cycle for a variety of reasons and this need is growing due to societal changes, including:

  • growing concerns around hormonal birth control is forcing women off the pill which means a more fluctuant cycle that requires better understanding and monitoring,
  • cultural focus on optimizing wellness and growing popularity of cycle syncing
  • increased anxiety around fertility as women want to have children later in life

Problem: The solutions available in the market to help meet this growing need are limited and the large majority are inefficient and inconvenient, namely:

  • Period Tracking Menstrual Apps – period tracking is not the most accurate method for cycle tracking, these apps do not base their calculations on your ovulation, which is the most important metric to accurately capture your cycle phases and your fertility or contraceptive windows.
  • Manual entry oral thermometer contraceptive Apps – whilst highly accurate these are burdensome and require taking a 3 min oral thermometer reading as soon as you wake up in the morning and entering it into the app.
  • Smart Watches/Smart Rings – these devices both offer streamlined temperature tracking. However, given they are unisex, they have underdeveloped menstrual health features and have designs that can be unappealing to women’s fashion and style. Also, SmartWatches often require charging overnight, which is a crucial time to capture basal body temperature for the purpose of cycle tracking
  • FemTek Nightime Smart Ring – whilst this has comprehensive cycle tracking and monitoring, it is only designed to be worn at night and doesn’t offer the ease of an all day and night solution that means you will never forget/miss a reading
  • Bellabeat Wearable - whilst Bellabeat is catered to women and provides more comprehensive women’s health insights, the design feels clunky and outdated, lacking the sleek and stylish aesthetic expected in modern jewelry.

50 women surveyed/interviewed..

75% who own a wearable have an issue with its aesthetic , functionality or performance

“They’re ugly, I wouldn’t want to wear it all day”

“I don’t want to be constantly tracking PBs”

67% of women ranked menstrual tracking/health insights as their no. 1 most desirable functionality to have in a wearable

I’ve been very curious and feel it’s necessary to start to track and understand my cycle”

62% of women currently use a tool to help them track their cycle

I paid for natural cycles - but you had to take your temp with a thermometer at the same time every morning which I didn’t do. I legit did it for like a week”

I want to understand why I wake up feeling crappy some days”

“I found the apps too much work to keep up with. Daily input etc”

86% have concerns about taking hormonal/artifical birth control and 75% have stopped or plan to stop because of these concerns

As soon as I stopped the pill, the mental health issues stopped. Doctors never once mentioned that the pill could be contributing to my struggles. It’s worrying that doctors are not well educated on this matter”

how it works

Does the technology already exist?

Yes. Micro, wireless and bluetooth enabled temperature sensors exist in products today that are approved by TGA and FDA for contraceptive and fertility tracking.

How confident are you that you can create a small, sleak design?

Very. There are micro, highly accurate and inexpensive wearable temperature sensoring stickers that are currently used and approved for monitoring infants temperature throughout the day and night.

How can you do a proof of concept before you undertake the expense of building prototype?

How will you build a prototype

I’m currently working with a hardware developer who specialise in wearables to design a prototype for a HunnyCycle bracelet.

I have purchased a micro bluetooth baby thermometer and planto integrate it into a piece of jewelry to wear on my wrist for a week to test it’s accuracy and performance against an oral thermometer and a smart watch.

why now

  • Cycle Syncing is fast becoming a popular habit to optimise your wellbeing and is trending across TikTok and Instagram (currently 115k+ posts for #cyclesyncing). People are using social platforms at the moment to share but also search for insights around menstrual cycles because women don't know much about it and are trying to find out more or spread awareness.

  • The stigma around menstruation is dissipating and being replaced by curiosity and female empowerment. Now is the right time to introduce something to the market that is all about embracing your femineity and putting it on display, whereas a couple years ago there was still a culture of discretion around these topics.

  • Digital birth control is a new and underdeveloped market with Natural Cycles becoming the first (and still only) birth control app to be cleared by the TGA in Australia in 202. I think there is a huge opportunity to innovate the technology and products that currently exist for digital contraception.
